The VW Van

While camping we spotted this awesome Volkswagon van. I remember these things from the 70's when I was a kid. I have no idea why, but lately I've been seeing more and more of them and I love them. I think I want one! So we actually saw the guy who owns this one next to it eating sandwiches with his kid, and we talked to him about it. Very interesting. He even showed us the engine. It was very cool (in the back!)

Anyone else remember these? The sound they make?

Same here! I remember watching those old 70s movies about hippies going on a road trip in their VW vans. And I thought to myself, won't that be fun -- carefree and happy all the time, no chores, no homework, no school. Obviously, I missed all the subtext about the drug culture in those movies. :-)

The weather up here has been erratic to say the least. It was hot and muggy last week and it cumulated into a steam bath humid Saturday morning followed by severe rainfall in the afternoon due to Hanna. Then Sunday was absolutely beautiful, dry and cool.

It's raining now. It's supposed to be cool and dry tomorrow but rain the rest of the week. :-(

One of my first cars was a VW bug. It had many mods. Drivers seat was screwed onto a piece of plywood secured to various body members because the floor had rusted out. Battery underneath back passenger seat had a heating pad connected to a timer, which I would plug in at night during the winter time. Fender attachment to rest of car used metal strap re-enforcements. One night after the bars and White Castle my sister's boyfriend (who had a VW van) and we decided to pack the wheel bearings. I think we started at 4:00 am. I really don't remember many specifics of that event, such as WHY?

Those actually make me nostalgic for my college days in Madison; we had a lot of hippies still hanging around, and you'd still see quite a few of them driving around.
